Most people call us only after they have been trying to get rid of fleas themselves for weeks – sometimes even months. By the time they decide to look for professional flea pest control services, they have dealt with a lot of stress and spent a lot of money on off the shelf flea control products. And they still have a flea infestation in their home.
Flea infestations can be very upsetting. Fleas normally come into your home on pets, namely cats or dogs. As the flea population in your house grows, the fleas will start looking for additional blood (food) sources, and the obvious additional blood source for the fleas are the humans living in the house (that’s you!).
If you are getting bitten by fleas it is definitely time to get in professional pest control services, and you will need a company that offers flea pest control specifically. Fleas will live and breed on the carpets and soft furnishings in your home, and once established it is very difficult to get rid of fleas.
The first step is to ensure all pets are treated by a veterinary surgeon for fleas. If pets are carrying fleas then no amount of flea pest control is going to work in the long term. Once this is done we will ask you to carry out the following steps:
- Hoover all areas of your home
- Empty the Hoover bag
- Wash all bedding at 60 degrees
- Clear general clutter off the floor, so the floors are as clear as possible
We will also ask you not to be in the house during the process or for six hours after. Then we ask you not to hoover for an additional 21 days. This is because the flea control product we use will dry into small crystals. Once dry and the crystals have formed, live fleas will touch these crystals and die off. The reason it has to be left for a full 21 days is because this is the time it takes for all flea eggs to hatch. We need the emerging fleas to touch the crystals, so the flea infestation can be eradicated.
Professional flea pest control is the only way to realistically get rid of an established flea infestation, because it will break the flea life cycle. Off the shelf flea control products might work on live fleas but may not necessarily break the flea life cycle. This means that remaining flea eggs are still able to hatch, the fleas will remain in your home, and the flea life cycle will start again.
